A year on……..

Today marks one year since I left my life in the UK to embrace a new life on the other side of the world.

Since arriving in Guadeloupe there have been highs and lows, tears and laughter. So what have I learned during this past year in the midst of the general world chaos?

  1. The University of Life is the best teacher.

When we moved our life to the other side of the world, we had an idea of how things might progress, however the circumstances of life can throw a spanner or two in the works! In our case the ongoing uncertainty caused by the worldwide Covid situation has slowed many things down but this is instilling in me a deeper level of faith in God, perseverance and hope. I know it will work out, but not in my time and plan.

2. Distance can never separate family

I found the idea of telling my family about the decision to move difficult but I should never have been worried! My family have been so supportive of us in every possible way and we have created even stronger bonds that distance cannot break. My mum, sister and I still message each other just as much. I speak to them often and we have three-way messages which are constantly updated. My dad and I communicate often too. I also love speaking to my nephews by video and seeing them grow. I look forward to the next time that I can be together with them all again. There has been the added bonus of being able to have more contact with other family members and friends across the world!

3. Whatever happens, I will get through it

Moving your whole life to another country and culture to start a completely new venture requires courage and a good deal of resilience. Fear is the first emotion that tends to try to creep in. I have had many questions that have plagued my mind including:

“Will I be able to do it?”

“Will I find new friends?”,

“How will things progress?”.

However, this is where my faith comes in and those questions have been answered positively in different ways, over and over. I am learning each day to rely on my creator who knows the future far better than I do!

To step out of your comfort zone and have confidence in doing so is not an easy thing, however you will never know what you may achieve by doing so until you try.
