A healthy body, a healthy mind

Coming away from London has taught me something very important- that sometimes we can be so caught up in the rat race that we cannot even recognise what stress is doing to our bodies.

Being in an environment which is more geared to better self-care, I am able to start to enjoy what I have always been passionate about, a healthy lifestyle. We live in an era when the world seeks a quick solution to the issue of health. As a Naturopath, I believe in promoting the body’s own self-healing mechanism through the use of natural therapies.

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling slightly sluggish and I decided to incorporate something very simple into my daily routine which has been great for boosting energy: contrast hydrotherapy in the shower.

Contrast hydrotherapy is a quick and easy technique which is known to be beneficial for enhancing circulation and the immune system. It consists of alternating with hot and cold temperatures when showering in order to alter blood flow. Hot water causes blood vessels to dilate so that the blood goes to the surface and cold water causes blood vessels to constrict, causing the blood to go deeper into organs. This has the effect of assisting the rate of detoxification and moving nutrients more readily to various parts of the body.

This is how to do it:

Start with hot as tolerable as you can for two to three minutes, then turn the temperature down very cold for 15 seconds, before going back to hot. Alternate 6-7 times before ending with cold.

Try it and see. It is amazing what a little self-care can do!
